State Library NSW Refurbishment

NSW State Library Mitchell Reading Room

The iconic State Library Mitchell reading room is one of the grandest architectural spaces in Sydney, dating back to March 1910 when it was first opened to the public.

Roll forward to February 2022, and a much needed transformation of the Mitchell Library Reading Room has been undertaken and is now complete. The refurbishment of the historic space involved the careful retention and restoration of many original features, including the furniture, which has been restored to its former glory.

The inclusion of modern technologies into historic spaces requires a careful balance between aesthetics and functionality. The thoughtful placement of power modules into the skirts of the original tables leaves the surface untouched, preserving the look and history of each table.

The refurbished space ensures visitors are immersed in the original history yet also provides the modern conveniences of wifi and device charging.
